Sultan Arman Nabiyev looked at the Russian. He'd seen the gunfight and as unhappy as he was with the present situation, given a moment to catch his breath, he realized just how close he'd been to ending up like Bey Nazar. Truthfully, that was part of the reason he was so upset. The idea of being afraid of a craftsman offended him to his very core. But Vasilii Lyapunov said he'd seen men fly. Swore it by his God. And while all Christians were liars, he didn't think Lyapunov was lying about this. If this man really could make devices that let men fly, craftsman was too small a word for what he was. Wizard was closer, but wizards weren't real. Perhaps he now had a definition for "engineer."

He took his own breath and said, "I accept your apology. And I too wish you were back in Ufa making 'pow ur pl a nts.' "

"I don't," Salqam-Jangir Khan said calmly. "Vasilii makes less of himself when he says he's an engineer. He is, but that isn't all he is. He fought on the walls at Ufa and was in the constitutional convention. He is a warrior, statesman and engineer all in one, even if he would put the last first. Accept your fate, Vasilii. We have a state to build here, and we need your skill for that. Build your airships later."

Then they got down to business.
